The Diodes

NXNE

30th Anniversary Shows, 1977-2007

The original 1977 lineup of The Diodes have re-united to celebrate the 30th anniversary of their Crash 'n' Burn Club and their first (self-titled) album. These NXNE appearances will be the only North American shows by The Diodes.

The Diodes helped foster the Toronto punk explosion of 1977 through their pioneering OCA (Ontario College of Art) shows and their Crash'n'Burn Club (Canada's first punk club), and later brought their sound to the world via a record deal with CBS Canada (their debut lp was released in the fall of 1977 in Canada, Holland, France and the UK. It was a best-selling import in the USA for many years). Their single, "Tired of Waking Up Tired" made year end best of lists in the UK and various US radio charts (including Top 5 on the Cash Box New Wave Chart). Notable writers such as Jon Savage (the band were subsequently interviewed for his definitive punk tome, England's Dreaming), Ken Barnes, Greg Shaw and others praised the band at the time.

This is the original 1977 Diodes line up: John Catto (guitars), Paul Robinson (vocals), Ian Mackay (bass, vocals), John Hamilton (drums, vocals). These are their first shows together in 30 years (not counting a one song only appearance on the Mike Bullard Show in 1999).

"A lot of people have been asking us for years and it's been hard to organize because half of us live in England, and the other half are in Toronto," says singer Paul Robinson. "But the synergy of this 30th year made it possible. "
